Ham and Beans

This ham and beans recipe is a simple, rustic dish made with tender beans and savory chunks of ham—perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients 

  • 14 oz ham steak, diced
  • ¼ white onion, diced
  • ½ lb dry 15 bean soup bag, half of the bag
  • 10 cups water, more if needed
  • 2 bouillon cubes

Instructions 

  • Rinse the beans in a strainer to clean them.
  • Add the beans into a large pot on the stove with the onion, ham, water, bouillon cubes and half of the seasoning packet that came with the bag of dry beans.
  • Stir well and let simmer covered for 2 1/2 hours stirring occasionally until the beans are tender, if the liquid line gets too low while simmering add in cup of water at a time until the beans are tender.

    I made the Ham and Beans yesterday. The mixture was very thin and I did add exactly what the recipe said. I decided to put in 1 can of diced tomatoes and Hunt’s pasta sauce and it was thicker and delicious. The flavor was delicious but I still wonder what happened with the original recipe. I used the regular 15 Bean Soup Mix.
