Expert Tip:

If you want to make this in the dutch oven, do everything the same, except cook it 300 degrees F for 2 – 2 1/2 hours.

How to store leftover pot roast:

Fridge: Once the pot roast has cooled down to room temperature, all the leftovers in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Tips and tricks for making the perfect pot roast:

Best cut of beef:

To get a nice piece of tender meat, you will want to use either a chuck roast or a rump roast in this. Tougher cuts of beef can handle and work well in a slow cooker to tender perfection.

How to make pot roast in a pressure cooker:

If you have an Instant Pot and want to use it to make this roast beef recipe and turn it into an Instant Pot pot roast recipe, you can!

Follow all the same instructions, but instead, place the roast into the Instant Pot inner pot, and then press pressure cook, and turn the setting to high pressure. Then set the time for 55 minutes for a 3 lb roast.

Once the time is up, let it do a 25-minute natural release of the pressure.

When using a pressure cooker, you can still get the delicious tenderness everyone loves from slow cooking beef, but by speeding up the cooking process.

Ways to add more flavor:

  • Use onion soup mix
  • Chop up some celery and add it to the carrots
  • Add fresh herbs like fresh rosemary or fresh thyme

Thank you for the recipe, it’s in the slow cooker right now. I’m trying to get back into cooking and your website/videos have been a lifesaver!

This was so delicious! I used round steak and cooked it in a smaller slow cooker. I cooked it on high for about 5.5 hours. Also, I mixed the packets and the beef broth together with a whisk before putting in. I think to add more flavor I will cut the steak into chunks next time before cooking. Overall, very delicious and easy!

I have an eye of the round roast instead of a chuck roast. Is the cooking time the same or less?
