This Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken is an easy dinner with tender shredded chicken coated in a sweet and savory homemade sauce. Everything cooks low and slow with honey, garlic, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and onion until the chicken is tender and full of flavor.

Once the chicken is cooked, I thicken the sauce with a simple cornstarch slurry and toss the shredded chicken back in. I love serving this easy Crockpot honey garlic chicken over warm jasmine rice for a simple family dinner.

Ingredient Notes

Chicken breasts: Boneless chicken breasts cook until tender enough to easily shred.

Honey: Adds sweetness and gives the honey garlic sauce its signature flavor.

Hoisin sauce: Adds a rich, slightly sweet and savory flavor to the sauce.

Soy sauce: I use low-sodium soy sauce to add savory flavor without making the sauce overly salty.

Garlic and ginger: These add plenty of flavor and balance the sweetness of the honey.

How to Make Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the garlic and ginger, chicken broth, soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, crushed red pepper, and rice vinegar.
  2. Add the chicken breasts and diced onion to the slow cooker.
  3. Pour the honey garlic sauce over the chicken.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for about 6 hours, or until the chicken is completely cooked and tender.
  5. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it.
  6. Pour the liquid from the slow cooker into a saucepan over medium heat.
  7. Stir together the cornstarch and water, then add the slurry to the sauce and cook until it begins to thicken.
  8. Add the shredded chicken back to the thickened sauce and stir until well coated.
  9. Serve warm over jasmine rice.

Tips for the Best Honey Garlic Chicken

  • Use low-sodium soy sauce so you have better control over the saltiness of the finished sauce.
  • Mix the cornstarch with water before adding it to the sauce to prevent lumps.
  • Shred the chicken after cooking so it can soak up plenty of the thickened honey garlic sauce.
  • Serve it over rice to catch all of that extra sauce.

Where is the butter used in beef tips? Shown in pic but not mentioned in recipe

My family absolutely loves this recipe! They ask me to make it every week. I used frozen chicken breasts instead (thawed). Since they are smaller than the fresh, I used 4. It was the best option since I can keep the ingredients on hand and make it on a day when I’m not as busy.

Don’t know what happened to my comment. Guess it was saved or something. Anyway I have two questions. 1. What can I use in place of hoisin sauce in the honey garlic chicken? 2. If I want to make 1/2 the recipe (2 servings instead of 4), should I still cook on low for 6 hours in my 6 quart slow cooker? Thank you.

  6. jmason says:

I want to reduce this recipe to 2 servings (1 large chicken breast, etc.). Do I still cook it for 6 hours on low?
Also, what can I sub for the hoisin sauce or should I just leave it out? Thank you.
