Tips and tricks for making these chocolate sandwich cookies:

Do I need to use cream cheese?

While you don’t need cream cheese to make the frosting, the cream cheese frosting pairs so perfectly with the dark chocolate cookie that I think you should give it a try and enjoy the best homemade Oreos!

However, if you don’t want to use cream cheese, you can make a standard buttercream filling to make sure you have a creamy vanilla filling.

More filling flavors:

  1. Mint cream filling (homemade mint Oreos would be fantastic! Just add some green food coloring and mint extract.)
  2. Chocolate buttercream filling
  3. Vanilla cream filling
  4. Cookie dough filling
  5. Peanut butter filling

Do I need to buy dark cocoa powder:

No! The great thing about this recipe is that you can buy the cake mix from the grocery store and won’t have to buy irregular ingredients that you need to find elsewhere.
