Apple Dump Cake Ingredients

Like mentioned previously, this is a three-ingredient recipe! And these are pantry staples so you should stock up on them so you can always make a delicious sweet treat 🙂

  • Yellow Cake Mix
  • Apple Pie Filling
  • Butter

It seems silly to list all of the ingredients for this recipe, because there are only three, but it’s worth mentioning that you can totally customize this recipe by using different cake mixes or fruit fillings. Peach pie filling or cherry pie filling would be amazing too! Or if you want something a little spicier you could use a spice cake mix instead of yellow cake mix. Really, the possibilities are endless! If you come up with a combo that you love, PLEASE tell me about it!

How to Make Apple Dump Cake

To be honest, I don’t 100% love the name “dump cake,” but that really is the most accurate way to describe this cake. It is only three ingredients and you don’t even have to use a mixing bowl. All you have to do is dump everything in a baking pan. It’s almost too good to be true.

First, you’ll want to spray a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray. Spray it super well so all the deliciousness doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of the pan. Don’t forget to spray the sides!

Next, dump both cans of apple pie filling into the bottom of the pan and spread it out evenly with a silicone spatula. Then, sprinkle the cake mix evenly across the top of the apple pie filling. It doesn’t need to perfect; just try your best.

And if you’re thinking this looks crazy and like it’s never going to bake into something delicious, you would be right. It’s this next step that makes this cake possible!

Take your thin slices of butter and arrange them evenly over top of the cake mix. The goal is to cover the whole cake with butter slices, but if there are little spaces between the pats of butter you will be ok!

Once you’ve prepared everything, throw the cake in the over for about an hour and watch the magic happen! After an hour you’ll have a yummy and gooey cake that goes perfectly with vanilla ice cream.

Hi! Love your recipes, website and YouTube channel! Do you think this would work if I substitute the apple pie filling with pumpkin pie filling or would it be too mushy and wet?

We used a gluten free cake mix and it came out wonderful! 1 cup of butter sounds like a lot but don’t skimp. Happy to have found an easy GF dessert! Thanks Julia!
