Creamy, full of flavor, and perfectly carb-y, this Chicken Orzo Soup is a delicious and satisfying soup that’s perfect for a cozy night in.

Made with chicken, orzo pasta, herbs, and a generous splash of heavy cream, this soup is an elegant take on classic chicken noodle soup.

How to Make Chicken Orzo Soup

Chicken Orzo Soup comes together in just a few minutes with minimal ingredients. To make this it, you’ll need:

  • olive oil
  • butter
  • yellow onion
  • carrots
  • minced garlic
  • salt and pepper
  • dried thyme
  • dried oregano
  • all-purpose flour
  • chicken broth
  • dry orzo pasta
  • can of chicken (you can also cook a chicken breast yourself, or shred some rotisserie chicken meat)
  • heavy cream (optional, but so delicious! if you want to make this dairy-free, leave the cream and butter out)

To make this soup, heat a pot (these are my favorite pots ever) over medium heat and add in your butter, oil, and veggies and saute for a few minutes until they’re all soft. Next, you’ll add in your garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and oregano and cook for 1 minute until everything becomes fragrant.

Stir in the flour and let it cook until it becomes golden in color, then slowly whisk in chicken broth, being careful to continually whisk so that the flour doesn’t clump up. And when I mean slowly, I really mean slowly, like a couple tablespoons at a time. This will help thicken the soup a bit and keep it from getting clumpy!

Stir in the orzo and chicken, and turn the heat up. Let simmer until the orzo is cooked, stirring often so the orzo doesn’t stick (in this case, stirring the pot is a good idea, lol). Stir in the heavy cream (it’s optional, but hightly recommended) and serve!

What to Serve with Chicken Orzo Soup

Olive Garden got one thing right for sure: soup, salad, and breadsticks are an amazing combination. You can serve this soup with any side salad and bread that you like. I recommend my Classic Side Salad, One Hour Dinner Rolls, and Garlic Pull Apart Rolls.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp 2 olive oil

  • 1 tbs 1 butter

  • 1 1 yellow onion, diced

  • 3 large 3 carrots, peeled and diced

  • 1 tbsp 1 minced garlic

  • 1 1/2 tsp 1 1/2 salt

  • 1 tsp 1 pepper

  • 1 tsp 1 dried thyme

  • 1 tsp 1 dried oregano

  • 3 tbsp 3 all-purpose flour

  • 6 cups 6 chicken broth

  • 1 cup 1 dry orzo pasta

  • 12 oz 12 can of chicken, drained (or use any cooked shredded chicken)

  • ¼ cup heavy cream (optional, but delicious!)

Directions

  • To a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, add the butter and olive oil. Once oil is hot and butter is melted, add in the onion and carrot. Sauté for 8 minutes to soften the veggies.
  • Stir in the minced garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and oregano and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the flour and let it cook for about 2 minutes, or until it becomes golden in color. Slowly whisk in chicken broth, being careful to continually whisk so that the flour doesn’t clump up.
  • Stir in the orzo and chicken, then bring to a simmer. Let simmer for 11-12 minutes or until orzo is cooked, stirring often so the orzo doesn’t stick. Stir in the heavy cream and enjoy!

  1. Just made this soup! Very tasty and easy.

  2. What a tasty and comforting soup! I opted to add in the heavy cream at the end and I loved the richness it brought to the soup. I had some shredded chicken in the fridge so I used that instead of canned chicken and I highly recommend it, but I’m sure the canned stuff works well in a pinch. My family ate it with bakery Country Sourdough bread. Yum!

  3. I made this, so easy and so delicious! Thank you!

  4. Just enjoyed a tasty bowl of canned chicken and orzo soup on a cold rainy day in the northeast mountains of Georgia. Thanks for the great recipe that was tasty, easy to prepare and economical. You are appreciated so much!
