Ham and Potato Soup Ingredients

This recipe uses simple, inexpensive ingredients that transform into a creamy, filling slow cooker dinner.

Ingredients for Ham and Potato Soup on countertop
  • Potatoes: Russet potatoes break down just enough to create a creamy texture.
  • Ham: Adds smoky, salty flavor — a great way to use up leftovers.
  • Carrots, celery, onion: Classic vegetable trio that adds sweetness and balance.
  • Cheddar cheese: Melts in for richness and cheesy flavor.
  • Heavy cream + flour: Whisked together before adding, this thickens the soup perfectly.

For Italian-inspired flavors, check out my Slow Cooker Italian Vegetable and Sausage Soup, classic Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili, or Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup.

Rest of the Ingredients

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/8 tsp oregano
  • 4 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

A full ingredient list with exact amounts is available in the recipe card below.

Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup Variations

  • Protein: Swap ham for cooked bacon, smoked sausage, or turkey ham.
  • Cheese: Use sharp white cheddar, Gruyère, or Colby Jack.
  • Vegetables: Add frozen corn or peas during the last 30 minutes.
  • Make it lighter: Use half-and-half instead of heavy cream.
